Binatang Biru: Walnut Street Coffee 2025

Hello! If you are here that means you have scanned my QR code at Walnut Street Coffee enjoying coffee and food. Thank you for being here! My name is Jane Kusuma and I am a Seattle based Southeast Asian designer + illustrator turned tattoo artist currently tattooing at NieU Studio Downtown Seattle. These are a series of paintings I created in recent years and available for purchase. A short summary of Binatang Biru:

Binatang Biru is Indonesian for Blue Animals.

This series is an exploration of my heritage as a Chinese-Indonesian womanin subject matters I adore.
My love for intricate patterns started young as my grandparents used to own a batik factory in Jakarta long before I was born.Batik is a textile technique of using wax and dye originated from the island of Java, Indonesia. I also grew up surrounded by blue and white pottery all around the homes of my extended family. Looking back through years of being an artist,I realized how much I enjoy drawing intricate patterns.

When I first started thinking about this series, I wanted to go home to my comfort zone of drawing cute animals while expanding what it means to embrace images of cultural arts I was inspired by whilegrowing up in Southeast Asia.

I hope you enjoyed these small selection of original paintings I’ve created. If you are interested in purchasing them - they are $225 each. They will be available for pick-up or shipping (cost not included in price) at the end of November. These paintings are also available in giclée prints format here.
